The Maiden's Tale ~ chapter one

~ follows 'Cost and Diversions' ~

Echoing from inside a tank, immobile and crawling with zombies ~

Nocturne - "Are we going to get sued for this one ?"

Mishil - "Yeah that might actually happen this time.  I mean what are we supposed to call it ?  'Girl Tank' ?!"

Mariposa - "I think if we keep making jokes about it, it's legally just satirical."

Nocturne - "Oh !"

Mishil - "We could just ... steal something else !  That we ... know how to turn on ... ?"

Nocturne - "I am not going out there again."

Mariposa - "Nope !"

Yorick - "no way mannn ..."

Mishil - "hm."

...

Nocturne - ... "girl-tank" ...
____

Decibel ports away under heavy fire, a nearby building takes a hit, collapsing among the already common rubble (explosion audio sample).

(From 'The Scribe', the Third of Three)

Crone - "And she saw him standing there !  Right in the middle of the road !"

Maiden - Bags of money (dollar signs) bouncing around in the back seat while she tears dangerously down the night time road in the rain, swerving near the cliff, "! Woooo ! ... Huh ... ?"

A time slowed focus to his face looking directly at her in the headlights, a long suit coat under an overcoat, all fitted to his square frame, strong jaw beneath a beard and a broad hat.

Maiden - Car slow-time barrelling toward him, "Oh ..."  Then as normal time returns, "Oh fuck !"

She swerves to miss him off the cliff, car tumbling as she rolls around inside, money flying out of the bags in the back seat. "Fuck ! Shit ! Dammit !" as she rolls and bounces.

Then off a high cliff, in the air, "Oh fuck ..."

A long silence before an explosion sounds, lighting the woods.

"! Damn it !"
____

At the bottom of the cliff the man in the road sees her standing with her arms crossed staring at the burning car, half burned money everywhere, her dress shredded and burned.

Man - "Hey ... miss ? Are you alright ... ?"

Maiden - "Oh !  Ummm."  Falls to the ground, horribly faking. "Umm ... ouch.  I'm not."

Man - Approaching slowly, "How did you survive that ?"

Maiden - "Oh that ? ... No idea."  Laying back and feigning great 'pain', "Hey, I don't suppose you'd like to carry me back up that hill ..."  She lazily gestures to the nearly impassable cliff.

Man - "I'm not sure I should move you ..."

Maiden - "Oh no.  You should definitely move me."
____

In his car, she's curled in the passenger seat staring at him, his coat tied tightly around her.   "Why were standing in the road ?"

Man - "My car just stopped.   It was strange.  And ... also that it just ... started right back up."  He looks over at her as pulls his coat over to sleep.

Maiden - Glancing from the sword in the back seat, a war sabre.  She closes her eyes, "Eyes on the road, sunshine.  You never know what'll come up next."

~ The Maiden's Tale ~

Nameless cuts buttons from Asherah's bodice with her knife, wrists gripped over her head in the alleyway, eyes inches apart.

Nameless - "I'll never stop loving you."  He puts the knife back on her gripped hands.

Asherah - She grins hard breathing, gripping the knife, "Slit your throat if ever you do.  She's almost through.  Still got a time to kill though."

He smiles before the kiss, then back to their opening of the box lid (from 'Life of Yorick'), and stepping down the long stone staircase, Asherah pulling him by the hand.

~ Turnstile throws the broom to the river, stomping off from Juliet.

Back to the alley, he pulls the clothes off a shoulder kissing down her neck.  Goremouse leaps in terror from the exposed pocket, blunderbuss dropping.

~ Juliet sighs for strength before the bridge to the carnival, then leaps back as Goremouse skitters under her feet across fast.

A ceiling panel flips hard open in a fit of dust in the Winchester Mansion where the stairs meet it (there's a staircase to the ceiling there), they step down, the tourists stare.  Cellphones raise, all batteries dead.

He pulls open a cupboard and throws her in, following.

The door slams behind.

~ Goremouse runs through the crowded feet, then along the brass piping which steams the carnival machinery.  They lead along into multiple nexus, like bundled industrial cables, forming bridges and walkways over celebrants.

~ Skittering a along, ahead the cabled steam pipes converge at a train station, train departing the core.  Dwarven machinists work amid the steam, disappearing into hidden doors.

A library bookshelf pulls open, the shocked librarian with the book in her hand still as the shelf pulls away from it.  Nameless and Asherah tumble through laughing with clothes half shredded off.

She runs, he catches against the far wall.  He bangs it with his fist and they fall through.  It slams shut, the bookshelf closing, returning the book in the librarian's hand to its place on the shelf as he stares at the far wall.

~ The celebrants spin past Juliet as she crosses, the view to the Ferris wheel turning in a blast of steam, crawls into and lingers the mist surrounding everything.

They roll throwing each other, clothes pulling through a manor room from the closet cupboard, two strangers fucking hard in the bed, not noticing as they twirl through and out the door.

~ Juliet crosses the bridge, the broom floating beneath crossing her path, nameless and Asherah at it in the alley behind, the train off into the tunnels of the mountainside.

Juliet Lost ~ two

~ The Maiden's Tale ~ chapter one ~ part two ~

The maiden slurps with her straw, staring at him in a late restaurant with a comfortable back door.  His eyes on hers go to the side.  He turns to look over the denizens, quiet, early for the crowd, late for the crowded.  Then back to her eyes staring.

She slurps.
...

Him - "So who are you ?"

Her - "The Maiden."

...

... slurp.

Her - "And you ?"

Him - "You ... don't know"

Her - Cutting him off at the end, "No."

Him - "That ... is truly amazing."

Her - Smiles, "I like these sodas."

Him - Slurps, "Me t"

Her - "Wanna fuck ?"

...

Him - "Into the dawn.  Into eternity.  And into my world."

...

Her - "Okay then."
________

Juliet just across bridge, the crowds at their way, mist and steam parted in walking paths generated purposefully in the machinery's layout.

Dwarves watch over on high walkways with the gear-works made clearly for them, some appearing to adjusting the created structures through the steam-workings, with still experimental results.

Guards, or those who appear to be guarding move watching over on tall stilts.  Telescoping goggles to one another across the way and over the crowd, they signal each other's movements and to the Dwarves, heralding new machinery becoming as the carnival grows.

A stilt-walker leaps out crossing Juliet's path to chase a thief running, throwing out arm-stilts to match his legs.  He runs fast over the crowd on fours before swiping at the target's feet in a clearing, dropping him.  He whips a cord around the thief's neck from the other arm-stilt and drags him off kicking, choking quiet into the steam.

"It's alright, so long as it is."

Juliet - Turns to see Germain, "Lord Bacon."

Germain - "Dear God don't call me that here the vegetarians will eat me alive.  Germain will do."

Juliet - "I see ... then are you dead too ?"

Germain - "Look over there."  She looks, "Are you ?"

She turns back and he's gone.  Rolls her eyes and turns back her way.

Germain - Standing there, "Cetus adrenals ?"  He takes a wide eyed drop staring.
________

A cop at the Buick's driver side window, eyes go wide - "Whoa !  It's  ... You !"  Glances down, "whoa."

A middle finger rises from his lap, the man pushes it back down ... then a cloud of money from his lap hits the cop in the face.  The man sighs ... then tries to reach for the glove compartment.

Man - "I'm sorry, honey, could you ..."

Maiden - "! Fuck !"  She sits up and points a revolver at the cop.

Cop - "Whoa."

The man pushes the gun down ... takes it ... she crosses her arms annoyed looking away as he opens the glove compartment, files through some photos ...

Man - "Got a family ?  Like ... some kids and a wife ?"

Cop - "Um.  Yeah."

The man looks at the maiden, she glances at him with a short giggle.

Man - "They got names ?"

...

Cop - "No.  Wife and some kids."

She laughs, he signs a few and passes them out to the cop, a bottle of whiskey under the photographs.  "Sorry about that officer."  Gears the car, "She's a wild one."

Drives off.

The cop stares after as she sits out the side window pretending to shoot him with her fingers until gone.  Opens the bottle, takes a drink, watches them over the horizon.  He glances down at the pile of money, starts bending over,

"Well ..."

~ The car hits a puddle ~

Maiden - Driving with a hunched over quiver and exhale ... "Whooooooah ... that's a lot of fun.  But it's not fucking me.  So where's the chapel, boyo ?"  Glances down.

Man - Looks up from her lap and under a leg, her wrong foot on the pedals, his arms through her clothes, "You really are serious about that."

Maiden - Looking down, "Who repeats herself ?"

...

Maiden - Looks forward driving, an exhaled giggle, glances down ... "But I really do like that though."
________

Juliet - "... is this as with those tales of Fae the Shaxbard babbled, where if I take the food or drink ..."

Germain - "Here to stay ?  Oh ... I do hope not ... the food here is incredible, what's edible, anyway.

Juliet - "And where then, is here ?"

Germain - "Hm.  That's the complication.  No one knows !  Wasn't here before."  He stares taking another drop, "Are you sure ?  It's really quite rare."

Her hand moves to hilt.

Juliet Lost ~ three

~ The Maiden's Tale ~ chapter one ~ part three ~

View over as a new structure grows from the steam nearby, paths clearing through it into.  The train announces departure with the mixed marketplace and ghostly crowds forming, the Xinhua Hunters (period early 1900's) fan out.

A man at a booth stands chatting, run through from behind by Qiu's blade.  He turns to beast in death as a wormish shade squiggles away.  Pinned by the other blade thrown into the cobblestone before dissipation up into the steel.

(music pause)

Juliet - "I think this must be Hell."

Germain - "One of many, if at all."

Out again through the mist, hunters fanning.  Occasional spins to strike, disturbing the steam, the stiltwalkers assisting through it.  Across an open field on the outskirts a remnant army of the conquered hell gathers for their approach.

Germain - Voiced over, "It could be newly conquered, reformatting into a 'not-a-hell'.  An amalgamation between what it once was, what it was intended for, and what it chooses ... to be.  Like us all.  I'm just passing through, personally."  Looks her over, "Have you any ... particular reason to be in one ?"

(music continues)

The hunters disperse into the open blank field, forming a long line, regrouped from behind by the more gathering, and through with stiltwalkers.  Aedera steps out from the line, examining the board and notating.

(music pause)

As they pass through a cloud of steam ~

Juliet - "... suicide.  As my Romeo ... for me.  I have to find him he's here because of me ... it's ... it's all because of me."  She cries into his shoulder while he seems a bit confused ...

Germain - ... Pulling apart, "But ... your tale is set in the Reformation.  Suicide shouldn't apply.  It was all fairly well rewritten specifically, so your kind could do whatever you wanted.  One way or another."

Juliet - Stepping back ... "The 'Reformation' ..."

Germain - Staring, half to himself ... "My god he didn't even bring it up not once, did he.  That gold kissed fool."

(music continues)

Germain - More directly, "Juliet.  You're not real.  You're just a story.  A tale told by a man and performed in it's day by boys.  I watched you three hundred years ago and this ..."  Holding the vial, "... was harvested a hundred years from now, three thousand years before that.  Bought it just the other day.  And you are, like all of this is, just a tale."

...

Juliet - "Go to Hell."

Germain - "Irony !"

(one song directly to next)

('Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun' by Beastie Boys)

Aedera closes her book over the quill and tucks it in her satchel.

Juliet - Voiced over the sweep to battle (music drum intro), annoyed.  "I think you mean 'synchronicity'."

Germain - (VO) "That's a terrible habit, you know."

Juliet - (VO) "Excuse me ?"

Germain - (VO) "Correcting strangers in a strange land."

(music main)

Aedera ignites the blade from her hand screaming forth, the Ezekiel machine rises beneath her feet.  Its four faces rotate, her standing atop it's walk, human face stops forward roaring raw power across the field.

The hunters charge from the clinging steam, pouring with from within all parts of the carnival to join.  Ahead a hard wall of the more massive of the profane beasts locks formation.

('Forever in My Life' (live) by Prince)

View over the preacher's shoulder, passing between the maiden and the man leaning in to kiss, in the otherwise empty chapel.  The front doors stand open over the desert as the view goes through and out.  Across the dirty road and into the motel door left wide open where they begin.

~ The Decibel ports in over the cannons lined protecting the gate and control, turning to fire from the end of 'Cost and Diversions'.  It ports away and back between to two port fore, bringing down their towers before exit again.

He throws her to the bed and starts pulling off his tuxedo, she reaches for the ties at the back of her wedding dress.  He grabs her and flips her over, pulls a switchblade and cuts them, then stabs it into the bedside table.

She pushes up and flips back around beneath him, grabs his neck pulling in.

~ The decibel bombs another tower and ports out, pulling debris behind shattering another past.

He pulls off the bodice of the dress, and yanks the front down kissing.  Further and further down, while she stares gasping at the slow ceiling fan over head.

~ Dark inside, Timepiece is mounted on the motorcycle, working the monitor on the fuselage.  Cables hang in their place from the engine, appearing to belong there, docked.

A single slow hand from he foot and up her thigh, along her curves and to her face as he kisses.

~ The engine glows before another jump.

The maiden's eyes open wide with a gasp, tears stream

Man - "I love you."  Her eyes close fading out the view, music through the credits.

the end

~ after credits ~

Inside the tank, clothes hanging and strewn from the works, they hear a series of explosions and roaring zombies.  Some gunshots ... a flame thrower ... some cursing ... then a deep banging on the side of the tank.

...

Grabbing at clothes.

Doe - From outside, "Hey um.  Nocturne ?  You in there ?"

...

Nocturne - "... yeah ... ?"

Doe - "Forgot your phone."

The hatch creaks opens.  A phone drops in, a grocery bag spilling over with snacks, three pints of ice chunky cream, clips and sandwiches, and an M1 Abrams manual.  The hatch closes.

...

They all burst laughing, she picks up the phone.

Flips it open (yes, they're durable), onscreen ~ "Love ya babe."

Outside screeching tires.
